Latin America is experiencing an unprecedented transition in its online teaching models. However, the promises of learning faster, anytime, anywhere are being accompanied by high levels of student dropout. For this reason, many emphasize that the current model has not really managed to change our ways of learning. After a decade, new opportunities open up. Universities have learned from their mistakes and today have more experience, and students are also now more aware of the benefits and limitations of learning online. Below I present five ideas that summarize the main vectors of the new paradigm of learning on the Internet.
1 It is becoming more sustainable The increase in the volume of open license content such as Creative Commons has been considerable, and today it is easier than ever to find the material necessary to create a course. “Open educational resources,” such as those promoted by Ukraine Mobile Number List the IDB , and increasingly widespread access to open access scientific articles have greatly reduced entry costs and improved the sustainability of these initiatives. In addition to reducing costs, attractive business models have been developed, such as the “ feemium ” model used by many MOOCs and which generated revenues of more than four million dollars for Coursera.
2 No longer limited to a single educational platform Commercial platforms like Blackboard dominated the first generation of e-learning. Then free or open source platforms such as Sakai or Moodle arrived on the scene , which became very popular among educational institutions due to savings on use licenses. Today, however, new means of guiding learning seem to have emerged and it no longer makes sense to limit learning to a single platform. The use of personal learning environments is increasingly common , where students can combine online services and platforms according to their interest and needs.
3 No longer just limited to formal learning The attention that exists on MOOCS showed that the interest in accessing learning and updating experiences is not always linked to obtaining an academic certificate. The private sector quickly understood it as a possibility to update its human resources and it has given rise to semi-formal qualification experiences in non-formal environments as shown by edX and Coursera ; or social recognition through skills such as Digital Badges , LinkedIn .
4 Interaction between users will become increasingly important The digital revolution has meant that educational institutions have lost the monopoly of providing quality content. Google Books , DOAJ or Slideshare prove that the online learning offer has to offer more than a selection of recommended readings. Now the value is in stimulating more conversational spaces, whether virtual or in-person, and they are giving way to hybrid Outliers School learning models in Latin America.
5 Education will be mobile, or it will not be Mobile technology is a fundamental part of the digital ecosystem and will become increasingly important. Part of the success of TED or YouTube is in their portable content, mostly short (“ snack ”) that allows learning in small doses during free time. Therefore, it will be necessary to adapt the content to mobile formats, both in language, format, duration and ways of using the content. Online education will inevitably be more multimedia, shorter and modularized.
There is no doubt about the opportunities that this second generation of online learning poses for educational institutions and any organization interested in generating and disseminating knowledge. But be careful, ignoring these changes can pose a great risk for those who are not able to adapt quickly to these innovations. Many institutions have already opted for open data and have created their own databases, but where are they? how can they be found? Curiously, we have gotten into the same mess as when we started creating websites in the nineties: today there are so many open data platforms that it is difficult to find the information.
For some time now there has been an open data explorer that not many people know about. It is really useful because it allows you to understand who is publishing data and what they are publishing. Do you want to know how much our region has grown in the last decade, or how many phone lines there are? Do you want to know if our rivers are contaminated? Many of these things can be found in just six steps. Here I explain how to do it with a practical exercise . Let's go there, it's very simple. 1Access Google Public Data Explorer In Google Public Data Explorer you can search for databases that can be explored and viewed. It is not an exhaustive list, but there is more information every day.
